Review – Zoar

Posted on by

Zoar is a weird nut. It wants to be a strategic euro, but the random elements may be too powerful. It wants to be a game of high interaction, but above all rewards patience. It requires planning until the gods strike you down.

And that wasn’t a metaphor. There’s like all this lightning and death and *pew boom crackle*

Review – Pictomania 2nd Ed.

Posted on by

I had the privilege of helping out CGE at Gen Con 2018 when they debuted Pictomania 2nd Edition. Over those few days the creativity I saw was matched only by the hilarity of the art. So many four-legged hippo shaped creatures (that were clearly zebras come on!) and so many floating stick men doing the macarena.

Freud would have had a field day.

Review – Pandemic Legacy S1 & S2

Photo from Semi-Coop

The great thing about thematic gaming is the escapism. Imagining new worlds and living unrealistic stories. Pandemic affords you the rosy experience of extinction by plague, rather than the nightmarish Mad Max hellscape we are hurtling toward.

And to be even more cheerful, I can’t post photos of this game without spoiling it. So I’ve included a bunch of cute pets instead!

Review – Spirit Island

Posted on by
  • A close up view of the map, dahan and invaders of Spirit Island

Since first playing Spirit Island at GenCon 2015, I’ve learned of the reality I am sorry to have not understood. These past few years, the light of the future has been dimming, and it allowed me to finally see some of the dark holes of our society that my privileged self ignored. One truth that I’m just beginning to understand is the horrible reality ripples caused by colonialism.

Spirit Island lets you devour colonizers in hellish shadow flame and cataclysmic eruptions. It’s delicious.

Review – Don’t Mess With Cthulhu

Posted on by

Have you played Shouty Witch Hunt the boardgame? It’s the newest way to create bad feelings and resentment! Everyone gets a secret role and then spends the next 20 minutes accusing each other with baseless assumptions and I’M LOUDER THAN YOU DISCUSSION.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of social deduction games. But maybe you are? Continue reading “Review – Don’t Mess With Cthulhu”

Review – The Grizzled

Posted on by

Unfortunately, I’ve gotten real busy. My trip to Essen was incredibly fruitful and caused me not to have time to get a review ready for you. However, in honor of Armistice Day and to make sure I put something up this week, here is my review for the Grizzled I did long ago. It won’t follow the typical format, but I always liked it. Hope you enjoy!

You have been sitting in a frozen patch of dirt for hours. The shells continue to fall and the night seems endless. You hear the whistles of the mortars before seeing the explosions, a constant rain of dirt as the blasts ring out all around you. You bury your head in your arms and pray the enemy will soon run out of shells.

Review – Villainous

Posted on by

Nostalgia is a dangerous drug, a double edged sword that can inspire or shred. In a world full of remakes, sequels and retellings, nostalgia is the drug of choice. It’s for this reason we have Disney’s Villainous, a game that hides its mediocrity behind a veil of Disney villains. But Villainous is an important game for our hobby, and we should be glad it exists. Continue reading “Review – Villainous”

Micro Review – Fugitive

Posted on by

Fugitive is one of the best race games you’ll ever play and it consists of only 42 cards. A two-player only game of pursued and pursuer, racing towards an escape or capture. As the marshal you’ll need to deduce the path of your prey, while the fugitive must outwit the hunter with clever twists and misdirection. Continue reading “Micro Review – Fugitive”

Micro Review – Jungle Race

Posted on by

Jungle Race may be one of my biggest surprises of the year. The rulebook does not sell the game. Play a card, move a racer. It all sounded so random and simple.

It was the most fun we had that night. Continue reading “Micro Review – Jungle Race”
